React Native, Flutter or native? Choosing a stack you won't regret

May 2026 · 6 min read

A practical comparison of cross-platform and native iPhone/Android development, and the conditions that should decide it.

What you're actually building

Cross-platform (React Native, Flutter) is the right default when the app is mostly screens, forms, lists and network calls — which describes most business apps.

Native (Swift/Kotlin) earns its extra cost when the product depends on hardware: BLE and NFC access, camera or ML pipelines, background location, high-frame-rate graphics, or deep OS integration.

The parts that decide the budget

• Hybrid teams: one shared codebase with native modules where it matters is usually the honest answer.

• Long-term maintenance cost of framework upgrades versus two native codebases.

• Hiring and handover: who maintains this in three years?

• Performance budgets set before the first screen is built, then measured.

A realistic first release

Decide during discovery, in writing, with the trade-offs named.

Prototype the riskiest hardware interaction first — the choice usually makes itself.
